Jim Lanning, elder at South Main Church of Christ, takes a moment to analyze this and provide and answer.

“First, let’s define the word ‘denomination’. It means breaking something up into parts. […] In Matthew 16:18, it says ‘I will build my church’. Who is nailed to the cross? Christ. He is the one who died and bought the church. It was purchased with his blood,” Jim said.

In the first century, if you would have asked them ‘which denomination are you?’, nobody would have known what you were talking about. We says that that’s the church, that should be the legitimate church of the first century that Jesus Christ started.
