Quick Question

Is December 25 Christ’s birthday?

Jim Lanning, elder at South Main Church of Christ, says December 25 is probably not Christ’s birthday.

“More than likely, he was born in the late winter or early spring. But that is probably not the point when we’re talking about Christ’s birthday, anyway,” Jim says.

Matthew 2:1 says “now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in Judea, in the day of Herod the king behold there came of wise men from the East, through Jerusalem.”

Really, there is no direction on remembering his birthday, how to celebrate it or what it has to do with religion.

“One of the things we like to say when following the New Testament church, we speak where the Bible speaks and we’re silent where the Bible is silent,” Jim says.

Christmas is a time for families to get together, but if we are looking to what we are doing religiously, it is not something the Bible said we should celebrate “In Christ”. We know Christ had to be born because he was human, but it is not a religious holiday.
